The Pacific Crest Field is the second largest of the
clearings. Because it has been
cleared for the shortest length of time, it appears as the rawest of the four
fields. It contains a cluster of
simple metal clad buildings currently occupied by the Wind River Canopy Research
Facility. The University of Washington, the USDA Forest Service Pacific
Northwest Research Station, and Gifford Pinchot National Forest cooperatively
manage this research project.

Soaring in the Wind:
Located a quarter mile from
the northeast corner of the Pacific Crest Field, within the old growth forest,
is the Canopy Crane. The 250-foot tall crane provides researchers access to
nearly 6 acres of old-growth canopy.
